1. Record the symptom and clear extra options
Restart the PC, note the exact error and check whether a game window appears. In Dota 2’s Steam Library properties, save the current launch-options line in a note, then clear it for the test. Matchmaking availability alone does not measure startup: opening the client and connecting to the coordinator are separate stages.
2. Verify Dota 2 files
Select Installed Files in the game’s properties and verify integrity. Wait for completion and any replacement downloads, then test with the launch-options field empty. Valve notes that certain local configuration files can fail validation; this message does not justify deleting your entire Steam library.
3. Test -autoconfig on its own
If startup still fails, enter only -autoconfig and test again. Valve suggests this option to check the effect of video configuration; it can change settings. If the game opens, remove the option before adjusting graphics further. Record the result before trying another configuration.
4. Replace it with -safe for a separate test
If the first option did not help, remove -autoconfig and enter only -safe. Do not combine both or append old commands: Valve recommends testing them individually. After a successful launch, remove -safe and adjust graphics in the game. For an ongoing failure, check drivers and the system’s compatibility with the requirements.
5. Report a reproducible case
Provide the operating system, graphics model, exact error and outcome of each separate test. The official Dota 2 support page also links reporting channels for gameplay and macOS/Linux client issues. Do not apply Windows instructions automatically to another OS. A blue screen or whole-PC restart needs system diagnosis, beyond trying more Dota launch options.
