CS2: VAC disconnects and access to secure servers

Keep the complete message first. A technical VAC-server disconnect, incompatible software, and a confirmed VAC ban require different responses.

Identify the actual restriction

This guide primarily covers Disconnected by VAC: You cannot play on secure servers on Windows PCs. If another screen mentions verifying a game session, do not treat that wording alone as proof of a ban. Check Steam account notices separately. Save the error, time, and stage: game startup, joining a server, or an ongoing match.

Restart and verify installed files

Exit CS2 and Steam completely, restart the PC, and try again. If you used custom textures, a skin changer, or software modifying game files, stop using it and remove its modifications. In the Steam library, open CS2 Properties, Installed Files, and the integrity check. Do not delete the entire library or save folders: verification checks the game’s installed files.

Check interference from background software

Steam associates this disconnect with third-party software interfering with the game or client. Close applications that inject into the game process or modify its files before retrying. CS2 Trusted Mode is enabled by default and blocks foreign injections; starting incompatible software later can disconnect you until you relaunch in that mode. Record which application preceded the failure instead of changing several settings together.

When the basic checks are insufficient

The official VAC page includes a separate Steam Service repair step. It needs administrator rights and the correct Steam installation path; use the documentation’s command after checking that path. The -allow_third_party_software option changes third-party software handling and is not a universal repair. For persistent failures, keep your results for Steam Support rather than guessing at Windows boot or security changes.

When an account actually has a VAC ban

Steam states that VAC bans are permanent and Support cannot remove them manually. A ban found to be incorrect is removed automatically after investigation. Reinstallation, file verification, and service repair do not remove a confirmed ban. A Competitive cooldown caused by incompatible-software disconnection is a separate restriction; the Trusted Mode FAQ says such cooldowns cannot be manually removed either. The word VAC alone does not establish a duration.
