Steam Cloud conflict: how not to lose your save

If there is a conflict between cloud and local saves, do not choose an option just because it is higher in the list. First, establish where the progress you want is located.

Before choosing a version

Close the game on all devices. Write down which computer you last played on and how the session ended. Find the save folder through the game documentation and copy it to a separate location. Check not only the file date, but also the progress itself: clocks on devices and time zones may vary.

Return to the game

If you are sure that the required version is located locally, select the appropriate option in the synchronization dialog. If the last session was on another device, wait for it to connect and check that the upload to the cloud is complete. Do not run multiple copies of the game at the same time while you are dealing with a conflict: this adds new changes and makes it difficult to choose.

If the choice has already turned out to be wrong

Don't continue a long gaming session on top of an incorrect save. Check your backup, internal autosaves and available cloud files. The recovery method depends on the game. Steam Cloud is not a guaranteed history of all versions; a manual copy before transferring between computers helps maintain control of progress.
