How to backup your saves before mods

Before installing mods or transferring the game, separate the game files from the saves. Removing an installation and saving progress are different operations.

Find the correct folder

The path depends on the specific game, store, and operating system. Check the official help, developer's guide, or mod manager settings. Don't consider the installation folder to be your only storage location: saves may be in the user profile. Close the game before copying files to avoid capturing an incomplete recording.

Keep a clear copy

Create a folder with the game name and date. Copy your saves there, and separately the list of mods and important configurations. It is better to have a copy on another medium. Opening the archive and checking for files is more useful than a single message about successful copying. Do not replace the old single backup with a new one until you check the result.

Check the recovery

Return files only when the game is closed and take into account cloud synchronization. The save version may not be compatible with an older version of the game or missing mods. After recovery, open the required slot, check the key items and the character’s location. If everything is correct, make a new copy and record the working configuration.
